Are You Ready For Summer?

As you start to take your lawn furniture out of the shed, uncover your swimming pool, and trade your winter clothes for summer wear, it’s a great time to get your HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system ready for summer, too. Now’s the time to schedule an A/C System Tune-Up. Summer is coming and  that means switching from running your furnace to operating your air conditioner, which has been idle for several months.

During a routine A/C system maintenance, your HVAC professional will examine the components of your cooling system, checking for wear and tear that, dealt with early, could save you from expensive repairs later. Additionally, any reputable contractor should perform a number of tasks to get your system ready for the cooling season, including:
  • Inspecting electrical connections.
  • Inspecting and cleaning drain lines. (main & secondary)
  • Inspecting your duct work for air leaks and restrictions.
  • Cleaning dirty components, as necessary.
  • Lubricating moving parts, and looking for signs of wear and tear.
  • Ensuring that your system starts, runs and shuts off properly.
  • Checking thermostat to make sure it is properly calibrated.
  • Testing all electrical components. (motors, compressors, contactors, capacitors etc..)
  • Checking refrigerant charge.

Having a spring inspection ensures that you have peace of mind, knowing that your system is in good condition for the long summer ahead. However, that’s not the only benefit. A properly maintained cooling system will help lower your energy bills, cut down on repair costs, extend the life of your equipment, and ensure that your system is operating safely. Preventive maintenance can easily pay for itself over time through these benefits.

There are things you can do yourself  in your home to prepare for summer, as well. Check your doors and windows for leaks, sealing any you find with a quality caulking or weatherstripping. Ensure that current caulking and weatherstripping are in good condition, and make sure that registers and vents are not blocked by furniture, draperies or other objects. Additionally, change your filters regularly (every four to six weeks is a good rule of thumb).

To make sure your system is at its peak year-round, be sure to have maintenance performed on your HVAC system(s) at least once per year. We’d be glad schedule an A/C System Tune-Up  for you today.
